The penguins are protected from the extreme cold with a two- to three-centimetre-thick layer of fat and waterproof feathers. Emperor penguins are very sociable animals that live together in large groups, called colonies. At night, the birds stand close together and regularly change places so that everyone can get some warmth in the middle of the group.
